What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein found in the body. It has huge benefits and is a ‘building block’ for the body. It’s found in the connective tissue in skin, hair, nails, ligaments and tendons.

Collagen helps to make tissues strong and resilient and able to withstand stretching. It’s also often used in anti-ageing, as it keeps our skin from sagging, giving us that plump, youthful look. Starting in our mid 20s, we begin to lose collagen so can look to collagen supplements to help boost it.

Why is collagen important?

Collagen isn’t just for anti-ageing. It’s a protein responsible for healthy joints and skin elasticity. It's in your bones, muscles and blood, and it’s essential for our bodies. Our skin is made up of 75% of collagen, and it’s a third of the protein in our bodies. Vitamins for bones help us to make sure our bones stay strong, and a collagen or collagen supplement can keep us healthy.

As you age, your existing collagen breaks down, and it gets harder for your body to produce more. This begins as early as the mid 20s, and we lose 1% of our collagen for every year after that. Other factors including smoking, UV exposure and even what you eat can affect your collagen levels too.

Eating foods that contain vitamin C and antioxidants, avoiding smoking, limiting caffeine intake, and protecting the skin from sunlight may all help preserve collagen or boost its production.

By the age of 50, you will have lost almost 50% of your collagen levels.

Collagen is naturally produced in the body when we are young, but production slows down as we get older. Your early to mid-20s are a great time to think about starting to supplement with collagen and consider taking collagen supplements as part of your diet and daily routine. Research shows that taking 2.5 to 15 grams daily of hydrolysed collagen is safe. A smaller dose benefits your joints and skin, whilst a larger amount may help with body composition and muscle mass.

Without collagen, you may see more wrinkles and a loss of skin firmness and tone. Your skin’s barrier can also become compromised causing dryness, breakouts and blemishes. It can affect your nails, skin and hair too, making them more brittle. This is when hair, skin and nails vitamins can be helpful to stop breakage and keep them strong.

To stay on top of collagen, collagen supplements have become even more popular, and can help boost it when it starts to decline. However, the animal origins of collagen supplements make them unsuitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Signs that you may need more collagen

Signs that your collagen levels have started to decline can vary. They can include:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines on the skin including the face.
  • Joint pain or osteoarthritis.
  • Thinning, greying hair.
  • Brittle nails that easily snap.
  • Sore muscles that don’t recover easily.
  • Problems with blood flow or low blood pressure.
  • Decreased bone density.

What is Vollagen®?

Vollagen® is a plant based alternative to collagen. Vollagen® is designed to deliver the complex of collagen amino acids for the body, whilst stimulating it to make more. Created from plant based ingredients, it delivers the benefits of collagen without using animals.

Vollagen® is a complex of amino acids similar to collagen. Yet it has two advantages:

  • The amino acids are already isolated so ready for the body to easily absorb them.
  • Vollagen® is suitable for vegans and vegetarians without any animal byproducts.

Independent consumer testing of Vollagen® has shown incredible results within 60 days of use. Not only did they report firmer, more hydrated and softer skin but also a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. They also found they had an improvement in their health and the appearance of their skin and nails.

The science behind Vollagen®

The science behind Vollagen® is the key to its incredible results. Scientists carefully studied the amino acid structure of collagen and then put together a complex of amino acids that mirror those found in the collagen. All the benefits are clear, and taking it as part of a daily routine can result in stronger hair, skin and nails.

What are the key benefits of Vollagen®?

An independent efficacy study† showed that after 60 days of taking Vollagen® 1000mg, case studies found:

  • Firmer, more hydrated and softer skin.
  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Enhanced radiance and more even skin tone.
  • Reduction of dark circles.
  • Supple and smooth skin.
  • Reduction of breakouts and blemishes.
  • Skin appeared healthier and complexion brighter.
  • Stronger, healthier nails.

Your Questions Answered

I eat a very healthy vegan diet. What amino acids might I be missing? Can I not get them all from my diet? Hi, it is impossible for us to predict without knowing the intricacies of your diet. Amino Acids are not as high risk in a vegan diet as the likes of Omega-3 (EPA & DHA), Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 when it comes to deficiency, however without regular intake of good quality protein, Amino Acids can easily be lacking from many diets.
I'm currently taking Vegetology Bone Care and have been for circa two years. In April this year I started with plantar fasciitis and despite a plan of exercises and ice packs it hasn't resolved. I understand it can be caused by lack of collagen. Would it be appropriate to try your Collagen supplement to treat plantar and is Bone Care then necessary? Hi, it is worth considering a combination of Bone Care and Vollagen. The two work differently but complement each other well.
For the VOLLAGEN product what type of collagen does the amino acid composition/pattern resemble? (e.g., bovine collagen, marine collagen, porcine collagen? collagen type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5? Hi, Vollagen mimics the structure of Hydrolysed Collagen.. This is the form of Collagen consumed whether it is bovine, marine etc. (and regardless of Collagen type) as Collagen itself cannot be absorbed. So Vollagen, just like Hydrolysed Collagen, provides the Collagen Amino Acid building blocks for all types.
I’m interested in your Vollagen product. I am intolerant to corn (bloating and indigestion). Do you think I will react to this product given it’s derived from corn? Hi, Corn is the starting material for the fermentation but it is the isolated Amino Acids that are produced and used. We would not expect such Corn intolerance to be experienced with Vollagen. If you suffer from any acute Corn allergy, please consult your Doctor before taking any supplements as it is such a common starting material for many nutritional ingredients.
Am intolerant to gluten..dairy & Soya. Does Vollagen have these . Thanks. Hi, Vollagen does not contain any gluten, dairy or soya ingredients.
what are the "actual" ingredients used? you say you "start" with corn and fermentation but don't list them. there has to be more than just corn? and know where on your site do you list them. be transparent with your ingredients. thanks Hi, the "actual" ingredient is corn. It is used within a fermentation process, which yields the Amino Acids (hence why we describe Corn as the 'starting material' as the end material is different). It is as transparent as transparent can be :-).

I am very impressed with this, I did not expect much but after one month I have noticed my nails are getting stronger, my face has less small wrinkles and my skin generally is a better texture. I have always taken supplements but can't remember ever having such a positive change so quickly. I am also taking the multi vits and have got some colour in my cheeks and I have lost the yellowish tinge. I am 72 years old and I am very pleased to see and feel these improvements. Thank you!

Only been taking this for just over a month. I bought it to help my ligaments. Along with the exercises I am doing I am relatively pain free at the moment, hopefully I will gradually get stronger as well.

I’ve been taking these for nearly a month now and I’m experiencing some welcome comfort from a very painful hip. Hopefully it will continue to improve as I continue to take it.

It's really hard to find a vegan alternative to Collagen which has the right ingredients in it, this seems like a great alternative so far!
