Vitashine™ Vitamin D3 Spray
All FAQ'sVitashine™ Vitamin D3 Spray Back to product detail
QI am wondering if your Vit D3 spray is still effective without the K2 added (I note you mention many customers use additional supplementation with K2 in)? I am flexitarian and am looking for a D3 spray that does not contain artificial sweeteners or ascorbic acid like the Better U brand. I have a chronic sensitive bladder problem, so unable to tolerate most multivitamin tablet oral supplements. Thank you
Lisa M
A Hi, yes Vitamin D3 is effective without added Vitamin K2. It is correct that the ideal combination is D3 + K2 + some calcium, however for everyday use there is typically sufficient Vitamin K and Calcium within the diet to allow effective absorption of Vitamin D3. We're confident you will be pleased with the Spray as an option. It is 200iu per individual spray, dosed to 5 x sprays per day for the 1000iu level. At the 1000iu dose, a bottle lasts 1 month. We dosed this way to allow family flexibility so e.g. 1-2 x sprays per day for children, 3-5 for adults.
QHelp! I just realized my vitashine d3 liquid spray and my chewable D3 tablets were delivered to my mailbox 4 days ago! It is freezing outside, 24 degrees. Will this effect the quality of the vitamin D3? I give the D3 to my infant son who is 9 months old so really hoping all is ok!
Tina R
A Hi, they will be absolutely fine. High temperatures are not so good, but they are very happy with cold temperatures and freezing!
QHello, as vitamine D3 from lanolin requires a long process and the use of different detergent and solvent. I would like to know: 1) what is the process to extract the vitamine D3 from the lichen. Cold extraction? alcool? water? solvent? 2) Does it need radiation like the provitamine D3 from lanolin? and 3) How sustainable are your methods Thanks for taking the time to answer
Myriam D
A Hi, we use water and alcohol during the extraction process. We don't require any harsh solvents and we are not performing UV conversion of pre-vitamin D.
QHi, Is the maltodextrin in your Vitamin D3 from corn ? I have a bad food sensitivity to corn Thank you
Linda T
A Hi, the Maltodextrin is from Maize. It is the isolated and high purity dextrin and we use it because we can form a simple chewable tablet without the need for many additional excipients.
QWhy does the vitamin D3 spray have D-alpha tocopherol (vitamin E)? and what is the ammount it contains as it does not say.
Nelson M
A Hi, we add a small amount of Vitamin E (0.1%) as an Antioxidant to protect the oil against oxidative damage. It isn't included at a level of nutritional benefit, it is solely for the stability of the formula.
QHi, is this safe for newborns?
Fiona G
A Hi, yes Vitashine Spray is suitable from newborn.
QWhich part of the body do you spray the product?
Indu A
A Hi, it is an oral dose spray, so please spray directly into the mouth (or onto food). Please don't spray it onto the body itself.
QI notice from a previous FAQ response that you recommend 1 spray equating to 5mcg for newborns. The department of health recommends a daily supplement of 8.5 to 10mcg of vitamin D for newborns and up to one year old. Is there any reason you do not therefore advise 2 sprays to fall more closely in line with their recommendations? Thanks.
Ian C
A Hi, the recommendation do differ regionally around the world so we try and remain within guidelines across the board. With newborns we are also very conscious that most will be obtaining some Vitamin D from milk formula. Otherwise there is no reason, and for those seeking 10mcg solely from supplementation, 2 x sprays of Vitashine is ideal.
QOf the many lichens which particular one is it please? Is it of the fruticose or foliose variety? (I assume it is not of the crustose category). I wanted to know if it is a particular lichen (of many) that you use. Or do all lichen contain vitamin D3?
Berni R
A Hi, we don't disclose the specific lichen source for confidentiality-reasons (we do of course to regulators). It is a species with established food use, and we only found a single strain propagates meaningful quantities of D3. The growing location, altitude, UV levels are all vital for yield.
QDoes the lichen strain used have any trace of toxic compound (eg. Vulinic acid) ? Is lichen a fungus? Or an algae??
A Hi, no the lichen doesn't contain any toxic compounds. We extract the oil and test extensively for purity. Lichens are a symbiosis of an alga and a fungus, so basically both! They are incredible.
QDo you think you might work on releasing a higher stength vit D spray at some point? Lots of research shows the vit D health guidelines are far too low and optimum levels can sit as high as 130 nmol/l. One study showed significantly increased benefits for those with 125 nmol/l but just 5 nmol/l lower at 120 nmol/l the benefits could not be seen. My current nmol/l sits at 53 (the doctors say this is good but I know from my own research it is quite low as their own references for vitamin D levels are far too low). To reach higher levels of over 100 nmol/l I would need to take about 15 sprays a day of your spray at the current strength it is at. Any chance a higher strength vit D may be in the making?
Tori P
A Hi, we did previously sell higher strength 5000iu Vitamin D3 but unfortunately the uptake was so low we had to discontinue the product. Our market research tells us 1000-2500iu is the maximum viable strength at this time. We agree about the benefits of higher doses though!
QWhat is the efficacy of absorption of Lichen vit D to Lanolin vit D Are there any studies to show this?
Steven M
A The Vitamin D3 compound itself is chemically identical and we do not expect any difference in efficacy. Blood studies we performed in India showed it is bioavailable.
QDear Vegetology Representative, My understanding is that your company was the first to market with a vegan, lichen-based source of Vitamin D3 / cholecalciferol known as Vitashine. Regarding your Vitashine formula, what is the manufacturing process that you employ to derive cholecalciferol from lichens? How does your manufacturing process compare to the manufacturing process of a lanolin-based cholecalciferol?
Mark B
A Hi, the lichen we use naturally contains Vitamin D3. We extract the D3-rich oil from the lichen and concentrate this. It is very different to lanolin and other animal-origin Vitamin D3, which is synthesised.
QI have been taking the the vitamin d3 2500ui supplement during the winter. I wonder what your dosage recommendation is for the spring / summer / autumn months with an office job in London? I am 39 years old, I am quite active outdoors running and cycling a few times a week. I do suffer from SAD over the winter months. Can you overdo your toxicity levels of D3 if I take 2500ui throughout the year? Was thinking of getting the 1000ui version for spring / summer / autumn.
Ru T
A Hi, the recognised upper safe daily intake of Vitamin D3 is 4000iu, so you are fine to take 2500iu per day during the year. From your description, I would suggest you consider taking 2500iu per day during the Autumn and Winter months, but perhaps reduce to 2500iu every 2-3 days during the summer months. While there is no harm maintaining the higher ongoing dose, you probably don't need to be quite so high in summer (depending if we get one in the UK that is!).
QHow is the vegan vitamin D 500% NRV?
Sofia H
A The NRV for Vitamin D3 is 200iu, so Vitashine 1000iu tablets are 500% this NRV.
QHow much Coconut oil is in it? I just wondering the proportions approximately as I seem to have some very odd blood test results and am trying to work out what is causing it, be it food or anything else.
Sonya G
A Hi, we use Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) of Coconut Origin as the base oil within Vitashine Spray. This is the majority of the composition, so over 90%. We don't use Coconut Oil itself, only the MCT.
QCan Vitashine 1000iu be broken into two-piece and be given to a 1-year-old kid. Thanks.
Gaurav S
A Hi, we don't recommend trying to give tablets (even broken into two) to infants under 24 months old. Vitashine Spray provides an ideal option for babies and infants.
QHi, at what age should I increase the dose of d3 for my girls? I have a 5 year old and 2 year old, both have 1 spray currently a day
Louise C
A Hi, up to the age of 3 we recommend 1 x spray (200iu) per day. We then recommend increasing to 2 x sprays (400iu) per day from age 3-8 .
QIs Vitashine™ Vitamin D3 Spray suitable for people who can’t eat nuts?
Sophie D
A Hi, yes it is in terms of nut allergies. The one caveat is we use Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) of Coconut Oil origin as the carrier. Although it is solely the Triglyceride fraction, please be aware of this if you suffer from Tree Nut allergies.
Q It is popular among non-toxic group in Czech republic and we are asked to compair it with conventional vitamin D3 suplements. Why do you think Vitashine Is better than conventional vitamin D supplements? IT should contain the same molecule of D3 and should have the same clinical effect no? And you extract the D3 molecule directly from lichen? It does not need any further chemical modification?
Lena K
A Hi, we have demonstrated that our Vitamin D3 is chemically-identical to D3 from animal sources. Therefore there is no reason for any change in clinical effects. We do extract the D3 directly from the oily portion of the lichen.
QDoes this contain magnesium k2 And boron to help as co- factors
Caroline M
A Hi, Vitashine products are Vitamin D3 only. This is in recognition that a lot of our customers are seeking Vitamin D3 to add to existing supplementation routines. We combine D3 with K2 and Magnesium within our Joint-Vie and VegVit formulas
QHello, how many spray do i give to 7 month's old?
Katja B
A Hi, we recommend 1 x spray per day for 0-12 months. That is 200iu (5mcg).
QIs Vitashine Non-GMO?
Robert T
A Hi, yes. All of our products are non-GMO.
QIs this suitable for a 4 month old? If not, do you have vit D drops that are? Thanks!
Rachael B
A Hi, yes Vitashine Spray is suitable for babies. We recommend one spray pump (200iu) per day initially, or a dose in-line with specific advice from your Doctor.
QHow much D-alpha tocopherol does a spray deliver? Thanks.
Jasmine P
A Hi, D-Alpha Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E) is only added as an antioxidant to protect the formula from oxidation, so isn't included at a nutritionally-relevant level, and is mostly used up performing its sacrificial antioxidant role. It equates to an absolute maximum 0.28mg per individual spray pump.
QHi How is the vegan D3 produced? Meaning where does it come from if not from lanolin? Thanks, Denise
Denise H
A Our exclusive vegan Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) comes from a special, organic plant source called a Lichen. The lichen is harvested from designated growing sites in regions of Asia and North America.
QFrom what country do you harvest the lichen that goes into your Vegan D3?
Michelle D
A The lichen is harvested from designated growing sites in regions of Asia and North America.
QIs this safe for babies? Can i give this from birth?
Gavriel C
A Vitashine 1000iu Spray is perfect for a newborn baby. We’ve dosed each individual spray pump to be 200iu of Vitamin D3 (so to get the full daily dose of 1000iu, you spray 5 times). This is to make it flexible dose-wise to suit the whole family. For newborns, we recommend seeking advice from your Doctor or Midwife. We would typically recommend a single spray (so 200iu Vitamin D3) for newborn babies. You may be advised a little higher, but please do be sure to check for vitamin content in any baby formula/milk if you use any.
QWhat is the liquid in the Vitashine Spray?
Vegetology C
A The liquid in Vitashine spray is fractionated coconut oil (also known as medium chain triglycerides). It's an inert and virtually tasteless carrier.
QIs the d-alpha tocopherol in Vitashine D3 no longer from soy, but from the newer sunflower-derived source?
Vegetology C
A We now use D-Alpha Tocopherol from sunflower now rather than soy.
QWhere can I see the Kosher label for Vitashine D3 1000iu?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine products are not currently Kosher certified. They are Kosher suitable, but at this stage we have not been audited to obtain Kosher certification for the products themselves. However, Vitashine Vitamin D3 as an ingredient is Kosher certified.
QWould I get too much Vitamin D3 if I take Opti3 and VegVit together?
Vegetology C
A A combination of Opti3 and VegVit is a really good supplement regime. While both contain D3, the collective level is very low (400iu) and actually many people are advised to take a higher dose. From a safety perspective it is well below any concern level, which would be upwards of 10,000iu per dose.
QHow do I use Vitashine?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine is supplied as an oral spray which can be administered directly into the mouth or sprayed onto food.
QWhat is the dose I should take?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine spray is ideal for those seeking the RDA of Vitamin D3 (200IU). This is perfect for children. 5 sprays will provide 1000IU. Many vegetarians and vegans, and those diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency seek higher levels. We recommend consulting your Doctor for advice on dose.
QHow long will a bottle of Vitashine last?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine spray contains 150 sprays, which will last 30 days at a dose of 1000IU per day, or 150 days at a dose of 200IU.
QCan my children take Vitashine?
Vegetology C
A Yes. It is widely recommended that children are given Vitamin D3 and we recommend using the Vitashine Spray, at a daily dose of 200IU per day (1 spray).
QCan I take Vitashine during pregnancy?
Vegetology C
A Yes, but always seek advice from your Health Practitioner before taking any supplements. Vitamin D helps you regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body. A BBC report concluded "Pregnant women "must take Vitamin D supplements"".
QIs Vitashine registered with the Vegan Society?
Vegetology C
A There is justified skepticism about vegan source Vitamin D3 supplements and we are very proud that our products are registered with the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society.
QHow should I store Vitashine?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine should be stored in a cool dry place, out of the sight and reach of children. Refrigeration is recommended to maintain maximum freshness. Use within 3 months of opening.
QAllergy advice with Vitashine?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine is free from sugar, wheat, gluten and dairy products.
QIs Vitamin D3 superior to Vitamin D2?
Vegetology C
A The healthy debate continues on this topic. In our opinion, the published research suggests Vitamin D3 is superior. One particular peer-reviewed study concluded that Vitamin D3 is at least 87% more potent than Vitamin D2.
QCan I add Vitashine to foods?
Vegetology C
A The Vitashine spray is ideal for adding to food. The formula has no taste so can be added to foods of your choice. It is important not to expose Vitashine to high temperatures, so please don't add it during baking for instance. Please consume foods sprayed with Vitashine within 1 hour to ensure maximum freshness.
QCan I take higher doses of Vitamin D3?
Vegetology C
A We recognise many people seek higher doses of Vitamin D3 than the RDA of 200IU. That is why we offer flexibility and options of doses. Always consult your Doctor or Health Practitioner if you are considering taking a higher dose.
QCan I give Vitashine to my pets?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine is perfectly ok for pets, and they benefit from Vitamin D3 in exactly the same ways that humans do. The Vitashine Spray is ideal and just spray it onto his or her pet food!
QWhere does Vitamin D3 usually come from?
Vegetology C
A Meat and fish are the most common sources of Vitamin D3 in the diet. The reason conventional Vitamin D3 supplements are not suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans is because the D3 is extracted from sheep's wool (Lanolin) or other animal sources.
QDo lichens have proven safety?
Vegetology C
A Yes. In fact the lichen we use is classed as a food ingredient with a long history of safety.
QWhat is Vitashine and where is it from?
Vegetology C
A Vitashine is a vegan and vegetarian Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) nutritional supplement. Our Vitamin D3 comes from a plant source called a lichen.
