The new Vegetology bottle is 100% biodegradable in under 10 years! That is about 440 years faster than conventional plastic packaging!!
The new Vegetology bottle is 100% biodegradable in under 10 years! That is about 440 years faster than conventional plastic packaging!!
Our CO2 neutral bottle is eco-plastic made from sugar cane. The clever eco-plastic composition is 100% recyclable but also allows the acceleration of the process of biodegradation when it is disposed of in a biologically active ecosystem (trash, bin, compost). Sadly, the rates of recycling globally are incredibly low meaning that many recyclable plastics end up in the waste system. That is the primary reason we've opted for this bottle, so if it is not recycled, within 10 years it will have reduced completely into water! We are phasing in the new bottle across all of our products over the next few months.
Even our packing chips are 100% biodegradable starch instead of plastic. Try it for yourself – add some to water and they dissolve!
What is the biodegradable bottle made of?
The Vegetology bottle is made with eco-plastic from sugar cane. It is CO2 neutral.
Can you explain the biodegradability to me ?
Conventional plastic biodegrades over about 450 years when in a biologically active ecosystem (i.e. in landfill, or realistically discarded into the environment!). The Vegetology bottle allows acceleration of the process of biodegradation, to the extent that it reduces completely (into water) within 10 years. That’s 440 years faster than plastic!
Is the biodegradability proven?
Yes, it has been extensively tested to verify the biodegradability in different environments. Testing has been performed to the following standards: Aerobic environment (ISO 14855), Anaerobic environment (ISO 15985), Water waste (ISO 14853) and Marine water (ASTM D 6691).
Is the bottle safe and food grade?
Yes, testing has been performed to ensure the bottle is environmentally safe throughout its lifespan. The bottle is fully compliant with global regulations for foods.
What about shelf-life?
We have tested the bottle to ensure it survives well beyond the shelf-life of the Vegetology products before the biodegradable breakdown process starts in earnest. Therefore, while the bottle is in the customer’s possession and use, it will behave no differently to a conventional plastic bottle.
Can I recycle the bottle?
Yes. The bottle is classified as PE plastic and can be recycled accordingly.
How do I discard of the bottle after use?
Please recycle this bottle as you would with conventional plastic. Sadly, a huge amount of plastic intended for recycling still ends up in the waste system, which is the reason we've opted for this clever bottle. If the bottle is put into the waste system (landfill, compost etc.) it will fully biodegrade within 10 years.
Recycling is always the best route, but as we know rates of recycling are incredibly low, the primary purpose of the superior biodegradability of our bottle is to avoid it adding to the long-lasting plastics remaining in landfill and discarded into the environment.
Hopefully in future recycling will catch up with global demand, but sadly we are a very long way from that.
What are the packing chips made of?
We use a special, 100% biodegradable starch compound instead of plastic. They break down completely within a very short space of time. You can dispose of the packing chips in the recycling bin or standard waste bin. If you put one of the packing chips into water, you will see they dissolve!
