A plain-talking guide to the sunshine vitamin, and finding the right one for you.
Here is a strange thing. Your body can make vitamin D from sunlight. It is practically a superpower: expose your skin to UVB rays and your body manufactures the stuff all on its own. So why, according to NHS data, are an estimated 1 in 5 people in the UK low in vitamin D?
The answer is partly geography, partly modern life. If you live above the 51st parallel (which covers the whole of the UK, but also most of Canada, large parts of northern Europe, and a good chunk of the northern United States), the sun simply isn't strong enough between October and March to trigger meaningful vitamin D production, even on a clear day. And between the desk jobs, the school runs, the early nights, and whatever your local weather is doing, many of us aren't getting enough UVB exposure the rest of the year either.
The result is that vitamin D deficiency quietly affects people across every walk of life. The tired parent. The indoor office worker. The student who barely sees daylight between November and Easter. The person who eats well, exercises regularly, and still wonders why they feel run down through winter.
Which is where we come in. At Vegetology, we have built an entire range of vegan vitamin D3 supplements covering different strengths, formats, and needs, because we don't believe one size fits everyone. Let us walk you through what vitamin D actually does, why most D3 supplements aren't suitable for vegans, and how to find the right option for you.
What does vitamin D3 actually do?
Vitamin D3, the form your skin produces naturally, is not just a bone vitamin. It is more like a master switch. Almost every cell in your body has a receptor for it, and it touches an astonishing range of functions.
Bone health is the most well-known role. Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption in the gut. Without enough of it, your body can only absorb around 10–15% of the calcium you consume. With adequate vitamin D3, that rises to 30–40%. The difference is significant, especially for people managing bone density or supporting growing children.
But there is more going on. Vitamin D3 helps regulate antimicrobial peptides, your immune system's first line of defence against bacteria and viruses. It also plays a role in mood regulation, with research consistently linking low vitamin D status to increased risk of seasonal low mood, particularly through the darker months. And it supports muscle function too, which matters for everyone from athletes to older adults managing their strength and balance.
In short, it is one of those nutrients where the consequences of getting too little quietly ripple outwards, and the benefits of getting enough are easy to underestimate until you start to feel them.

The vegan problem most people don’t know about
Here is something worth knowing. Most vitamin D3 supplements on the market are derived from lanolin, a waxy substance extracted from sheep's wool. That means the vast majority of D3 supplements are not vegan, and often not even clearly labelled as such.
For a long time, vegans were directed towards vitamin D2 instead. The problem? A growing body of evidence suggests D3 is significantly more effective at raising and maintaining vitamin D levels in the body than D2. Choosing D2 because D3 came from animals was, in effect, accepting a less effective form of the nutrient.
That changed with the discovery that lichen (the plant-like organism you've seen growing on rocks and tree bark) naturally produces vitamin D3 through photosynthesis. It is chemically identical to the D3 your own skin makes. And it is entirely plant-based.
Every Vegetology vitamin D3 supplement is derived from lichen. Certified by both the Vegan Society and the Vegetarian Society. Effective, plant-based D3, without compromise. Because that is, quite literally, in our nature.
Five products. One question: which is right for you?
Our range covers different strengths and formats, because different people have different needs. Here is what each one is designed to do.
Vit D3 1000iu: The everyday option
The NHS recommends 10 micrograms (400iu) of vitamin D daily during autumn and winter for most adults. Our 1000iu chewable tablet gives you a sensible, confident daily top-up, double the government recommendation, for those who get some sun exposure through spring and summer and want to maintain healthy levels through the year.
It is a good starting point for healthy adults, and a smart choice for children (under appropriate guidance; please check dosage advice for kids).

Vit D3 2500iu: The step-up
If you spend most of your day indoors, you have darker skin (which naturally reduces UV-triggered D3 synthesis), or you simply want more confidence about your levels through the year, 2500iu offers a meaningful middle ground between the maintenance dose and the higher-strength options.
It is a popular choice for people who want more than the basics without jumping straight to the highest strength, and an easy daily chewable that fits into any routine.

Vit D3 4000iu: The high-strength choice
For those who need a more significant top-up, whether that's because of very limited sun exposure, a known deficiency, or simply the brutal vitamin D reality of a northern winter, our 4000iu formula offers robust daily support.
This one has a small but meaningful extra: it is formulated with baobab. Often called the 'Tree of Life,' baobab is an extraordinary African superfruit, extraordinarily rich in vitamin C, prebiotic fibre, and antioxidants. We include it here partly because vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and absorbed best alongside other nutrients, and partly because baobab is one of those ingredients that earns its place.

Vit D3 4000iu + K2: The complete package
This is our most comprehensive vitamin D3 formula, and arguably the most interesting one from a nutritional science perspective.
Here is something most people don't realise: vitamin D3 helps your body absorb calcium. But what happens to that calcium once it's absorbed? Without vitamin K2, it can end up circulating in the bloodstream rather than making its way into your bones. Vitamin K2 (specifically the MK-7 form, which we use here) activates osteocalcin, a protein responsible for anchoring calcium into the bone matrix. It also activates a protein called matrix Gla protein, which prevents calcium from depositing in arteries and soft tissues.
Think of it this way: vitamin D3 gets the calcium through the door. Vitamin K2 makes sure it gets to the right room.
Add in the baobab, and this is a genuinely thoughtfully formulated supplement: a chewable tablet that covers bone health from more than one angle.

Vit D3 1000iu Spray: The easy daily habit
If tablets and chewables aren't your thing, or you want something you can keep by the kettle and not think about, the spray is your friend. A couple of sprays under the tongue and you're done. No swallowing, no fuss, no forgetting.
It's also a good option for anyone who takes multiple supplements and wants to reduce the pill count, or for older adults who prefer a liquid format.

A quick guide to finding yours
Not sure where to start? Here is a rough sense of who each product suits:
If you're a healthy adult looking for year-round maintenance: start with the 1000iu chewable or spray.
If you work indoors most of the day or want more confidence through winter: the 2500iu is worth considering.
If you know your levels are low, you get limited sun exposure, or you're supporting bone density: the 4000iu makes sense.
If you want to support both bone health and calcium management more thoroughly, or you're taking a higher-strength D3 for the longer term: the 4000iu + K2 is the most complete option.
For simplicity, convenience, or if you hate tablets: the spray.
And if in any doubt about what's right for your situation, it's always worth getting your vitamin D levels checked. A simple blood test takes the guesswork out entirely.
One last thought
Vitamin D supplementation is one of the most straightforward things you can do for your health, particularly if you live somewhere that doesn't reliably deliver sunshine year-round. Which, if you're reading this in the UK, Scandinavia, Canada, or most of the northern hemisphere, is almost certainly you. It's not complicated, it's not expensive, and the evidence behind it is solid. The challenge has always been that most D3 supplements weren't made for plant-based people.
We fixed that. Every single product in our range is derived from lichen, certified vegan, and formulated properly, not as an afterthought, but as the whole point. Supporting your health without compromise.
That's what we're here for. And it's very much in our nature.
