What is Veganuary?

Whether you’re a long term vegan, someone who is considering trying out more of a plant based lifestyle or you’re simply vegan curious, Veganuary is something you’ll likely hear about and you might find yourself asking ‘what is veganuary?’

It started as a campaign in 2014 that aimed to encourage people to try a vegan lifestyle in January. It began in the UK but has picked up support around the world, with many people trying it out as part of their New Year’s resolutions.

Adopting a vegan lifestyle sees people stopping the consumption of animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs. Veganuary has earned widespread support from individuals, organisations and celebrities, and it has inspired many people to continue following a vegan diet even after January ends.

The campaign aims to promote sustainability, reduce animal cruelty and improve overall health by encouraging more people to adopt a plant based lifestyle. There are tips for veganuary as well as advice and support for how to cook meals, what to try and how to ensure you stay healthy too.

What vitamins and supplements do I need for Veganuary?

When adopting a vegan lifestyle, it's important to ensure you're getting all the essential nutrients your body needs and this can mean considering essential vitamins and supplements.

A vegan diet doesn’t mean having to miss out on nutrients or what your body needs, but if you’re concerned then you can consider taking all in one vitamins and supplements that cover what your health and wellbeing need.

Some vitamins and nutrients your body might need:

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is usually found in animal products, but your body needs it for nerve function and the production of red blood cells. You can get it from B12-fortified foods, which include cereals and nutritional yeast.
Vitamin D
While vitamin D is found in some mushrooms and fortified plant-based milk, it can be challenging to get enough from diet alone, especially during the winter months. A vitamin D supplement can boost levels, which in turn helps the body absorb essential nutrients like calcium.
Calcium is essential for bone health, teeth and the body’s health. Good plant-based sources of calcium include fortified plant milks, tofu, kale and broccoli but a calcium supplement can be useful too.
The idea that vegans don’t get enough iron is often put forward, yet there are plant-based iron alternatives available as well as being able to get iron from a vegan diet via beans, nuts, dried fruit and fortified cereals.
Consuming vitamin C rich foods alongside iron rich foods can also enhance absorption.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
While Omega-3s are often associated with fish oil, they can also be obtained from algae-based supplements. Flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and walnuts are also good plant-based sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid.
Omega-3s are essential for brain function and cognitive function, so are needed for our daily health.
Whilst zinc is found in plant foods, such as legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains, you can also consider a zinc supplement too.
Ensuring you are getting an adequate amount of protein in a vegan diet means eating plant-based sources such as beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, quinoa and nuts. Protein needs can vary, so it's essential to pay attention to your individual requirements but our bodies use it to help to build and repair muscles and bones and to make hormones and enzymes.
