What Chondroitin actually does — and why we replaced it with something better

The story behind why we replaced animal-derived chondroitin with Phytodroitin™ — and what that means for anyone who wants proper joint support without the animal ingredients.

Categories: Science

Here's something most supplement brands don't talk about. The ingredient in the majority of joint supplements - the one that's been in those formulas for decades, the one listed quietly between glucosamine and vitamin C - comes from a cow. Or a pig. Sometimes a shark.

Chondroitin sulphate is a naturally occurring compound found in cartilage. It plays a genuine role in joint health, which is why it's in so many products. The science behind it is real. The problem isn't what it does. The problem is where it comes from.

We're a vegan supplement company. So when we set out to build a bone and joint formula, we had a decision to make.

We could leave chondroitin out entirely. We could find a workaround ingredient that sort of did the same job. Or we could actually solve the problem - and create a plant-based alternative that matched the function without involving an animal.

We chose the third option. It took longer. It was more expensive. But that's how we do things.

So what does chondroitin actually do?

Think of your cartilage a bit like a sponge. It needs to compress when your joints are under load - when you walk, run, or carry something heavy - and then spring back when the pressure lifts. Chondroitin helps keep that sponge quality intact. It attracts and holds water within cartilage, keeping it cushioned and resilient.

Without enough of it, cartilage can gradually lose that springiness. It becomes less able to absorb the impact that passes through your joints every time you move. Over time, that's where the discomfort tends to start.

So chondroitin's role isn't just about structure - it's about keeping things working properly day to day. Which is exactly why we wanted to keep that function in our formula, even if we couldn't use chondroitin itself.

Introducing Phytodroitin™

Phytodroitin™ is what we use instead. It's a 100% plant-based technology derived from algae that replicates what chondroitin does - without using a single animal ingredient.

If I'm honest with you, finding this ingredient was one of the moments in our formulation process that made the whole thing feel worthwhile. Not a compromise. Not a workaround. An actual plant-based solution with the science to back it up. Each serving of our Bone Care formula contains 425mg of it.

And the glucosamine?

The other key ingredient in most joint supplements is glucosamine - another cartilage-supporting compound that's typically sourced from shellfish. Which, again, isn't an option for us.

Our glucosamine comes from a fungus. Specifically, one called Aspergillus niger - and before you worry, it's completely safe, used widely in food production, and makes for a verified vegan source of glucosamine. Each serving of Bone Care contains 500mg.

The reason glucosamine and Phytodroitin™ work well together is that they do slightly different things. Glucosamine supports the production of the proteins that make up cartilage, while Phytodroitin™ helps keep that cartilage hydrated and cushioned. They approach joint health from different angles - which is why they're better together.

The rest of the formula

Bone Care doesn't stop at Phytodroitin™ and glucosamine. The full formula also includes:

Vitamin C - which helps your body make collagen. Collagen is the protein that forms the scaffolding of your cartilage, bones, and connective tissue. It doesn't get much attention in joint health conversations, but it really should.

Vitamin D3 - which helps maintain normal bones. Ours is plant-sourced, as it is across all our products.

Vitamin K2 - which supports proper bone formation. We'll be talking more about K2 this month, because it's genuinely fascinating.

Magnesium - which contributes to normal muscle function and helps maintain normal bone.

Calcium - one of the building blocks of bone tissue.

It's a formula built to support your bones and joints from multiple angles at once, rather than relying on a single ingredient to do all the work.

What about collagen?

Collagen comes up a lot in joint health conversations - and for good reason. It's the structural protein that holds cartilage, tendons, and ligaments together. Without enough of it, those tissues become less resilient over time.

The problem with most collagen supplements is that they're made from animal sources: bovine hides, fish scales, porcine connective tissue. Not an option for us.

Our answer is Vollagen®. Rather than using animal-derived collagen, Vollagen® provides the amino acids that make up collagen - in the same proportions they're found in the real thing - from 100% plant-based sources. Your body then uses those amino acids to build its own collagen, exactly where it needs it. Each serving delivers 1000mg of Vollagen® across two capsules.

It's a natural companion to Bone Care for anyone who wants to cover both the structural support side (glucosamine, Phytodroitin™, vitamins and minerals) and the collagen-building side in one daily routine.

Why this matters

People with fish or shellfish allergies often find themselves shut out of the joint supplement category entirely, because the main ingredients come from the sea. Vegetarians and vegans face the same problem. And most brands don't even flag this clearly on the label.

We think everyone who wants joint support should be able to get it - without having to check whether something's been sourced from an animal.

Bone Care is Vegan Society approved, Vegetarian Society approved, and free from fish and shellfish not just in the finished product, but in the actual raw materials.

It's the way supplements should be made. And if I'm being straight with you, it's the approach we always intended to take. It just required finding the right science first.
